Marry in May and you’ll surely rue the Day
Traditional Irish Wedding Quote
In April 2016 Michael and I celebrated 10 years together and as one chapter ended another began, the next chapter in our fairytale love story. Now, I can’t believe it’s almost been a whole year since we tied the knot on May 5th and I thought what better time than our 1st wedding anniversary to share the day with you all!
There is so much to share from our day that i’ve decided to do a Wedding Week here on A Little Vintage Lady to offer some inspiration and a little bit of advice to any of my lovely readers who are engaged!
This post is pretty image heavy so grab a cuppa and settle in. Also as part of Wedding Week I’m going to do a follow up on how to get the look, our wedding dream team and also our little Vegas vow renewal but first up is the main event – our fairytale wedding day…
While we were engaged for a year and a half we decided to get married quite quickly once we set our wedding date. We always knew this would be how we would do it as we are both pretty impatient people and with my job I knew if we planned something for two years ahead I would change my mind a zillion times about what I wanted (initially I had wanted to run off and elope in Vegas!). We set the date in January and we were getting married just under 5 months later. I never panicked once as I knew from the amazing creatives I come across daily that we would find suppliers who we could work with. We were blessed that who we picked for our #weddingdreamteam all had our date free!
I chose to get ready in our home at the time surrounded by my best gals.
My day job is spent looking at beautiful real weddings and curating wedding inspiration over at One Fab Day and I’ll admit it was pretty hard at first to not want every single thing I laid my eyes on! We made sure to constantly remind ourselves that our wedding day was about starting this new chapter in our lives and that we wanted a day to celebrate marriage and not just about creating a trendy “wedding day”. The things that mattered most were that the day was a reflection of us, a celebration of our relationship and that all our guests enjoyed themselves.
My mum looked the most beautiful I’d ever seen her…
Our wedding ceremony took place at Church of The Immaculate Conception in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan. We were both baptised, had both our communions and confirmations here. We had a fantastic priest called Fr. Mark who never let us stress or panic over anything at any stage.
I really wanted to enjoy the moments with my Mam during all the planning. We took time off work to spend time together picking out the dress, shoes, lingerie and we really enjoyed celebrating these little moments together. While weddings can be so exciting and the start of something fabulous for you as a couple, it can be hard for parents as they watch their little girl or boy seem to be
My Mum is my world and I never wanted her to feel like she “giving me away”. We held hands as we walked up that aisle together to place my hand in Michael’s as we start our new stage of life together and later we celebrated how far I have come in life with her help and guidance.
While our day was perfect and I truly wouldn’t change a thing, it wasn’t without some hiccups! Michael’s grandad wasn’t able to make it on the day and was so missed and a very talented person from my #weddingdreamteam also unfortunately couldn’t make it on the day. I woke up with spots and a cold sore, my poor bridesmaid knocked one of her teeth out the day before and my other bridesmaid fell down a stairs a few days before that (they were both okay!). It was still the most magical day and above all, I got to marry my best friend. The day will go so fast that you won’t even have time to worry about the little things!
Michael making me feel like a Disney princess!
Our wedding reception took place at the gorgeous Virginia Park Lodge in Virginia Co. Cavan. The gardens were in full bloom and made for a gorgeous backdrop for our portraits.
As much as I love DIY and crafting I made sure not to go overboard. I thought about what we realistically achieve in our short timeframe and just stuck to that. Mum and I had fun hunting down all the vintage elements such as vintage linen, teapots, teacups, plates, cakestands, bottles as well as vintage glass and brass candle holders and bits of furniture. We spent the day before dotting them around the reception and having fun putting everything into place. I made a ribbon backdrop for those all important selfies and a vintage wallpaper backdrop for our floral inspired table plan with the help of Michael, Mum’s partner and Mum. On the day my mum, my bridesmaid Joanna and Abigail Bell from PETAL Studio made sure everything was in it’s perfect place.
