A few weeks ago my mum and I headed off to Belfast for a little creative day out to The Scent of Summer masterclass with the amazing Abigail Bell of PETAL Studio and The Bearded Candle Makers. I’ve always been a huge flower lover. To me, they bring so much joy so when I spotted the chance to learn how to put together my own beautiful arrangements I jumped at it!
The morning began at the PETAL studio (dream space!) where we were welcomed with a warm smile and a big hug! We then met all the other lovely ladies attending over a cheeky glass of Bucks Fizz and pastries. After, we made our way into the workshop room which was filled with the most dreamy blooms.
Abigail kick-started the class by telling us what beautiful flowers and scents we had to choose from, followed by a demo of her own process of arranging beautiful blooms and chatting about her reasons for using eco-friendly Oasis free techniques.
We then got to make our own masterpiece all under Abigail’s expert guidance and tuition. The masterclass is all about learning about working with the floral scents of the season and it was like being a kid in a candy shop having the chance to pick from all the gorgeous scented flowers! We got to choose from the most beautiful roses, blooms such as dahlias, hydrangeas, honeysuckle, sweet pea, foraged foliage and more all locally grown or Abigail’s own home-grown gorgeousness that were freshly picked that morning.
We then had a break for lunch which was a delicious antipasti spread by Abigail’s other half Ryan with some of the best brown bread I’ve ever tasted! As we tucked in Abigail kindly snapped our creations and these are the beautiful images you see here.
The afternoon was all about scent building and candle making with the charming Mike of the Bearded Candle Makers. We learned how to pair scents and choose ones which matched our floral creations from the morning. He taught us his candle making process using essential oils and eco-friendly soy wax to create three hand-poured candles. My candles were made up of Sweet Pea (my fave), nutmeg and Orange Blossom and it’s quite possibly my favourite candle scent ever.
While we waited for our candles to set we had teas and coffees with a big slice of sponge cake filled with cream and rose petal jam cake which i’m daydreaming of right now!
This was honestly one of my favorite activities I’ve done all summer. It was just so enjoyable and such a lovely creative day out. If you love flowers (and candles!) I’d highly recommend it.
If you want to pop along to one of these amazing masterclasses there is an Autumn workshop coming up real soon and you can find out more here www.petal-studio.co.uk/. Tickets are almost sold out but don’t fret if you don’t get a spot this time there will also be a winter one too (which I can’t wait for!).
Here’s a few of my behind the scenes snaps from the day…
